Love letters mainly serve two purposes in the present context:

The advancement of technology poses serious threats to love letters. Many people are of the opinion that the love letters are in the verge of extinction and we should preserve them as the endangered medium of communication between the lovers.
Perhaps, because of that reason, Mr. Superman has defined love letters as the primitive medium of proposing your boy/girl and communicating with him/her. However, that might be because Superman is very revolutionary person. He has made his presence ubiquitous although he hasn't been born yet. He is a person of the future many years ahead of us. Therefore, it's obvious and natural for him to feel like that. Nevertheless, for the rest of us, the love proposal letters are pretty common although the younger generations have shifted towards using text messages instead of full written letters. Many love birds these days, talk over phone or video chat over the internet due to the advancement of the technology. However, the essence is still the same, to communicate the voice of the heart with each other.
